The Future of Solar: Markets, Data, and Finland’s Role

Solar 2026 brings together industry experts, policymakers and market leaders to discuss solar market trends, electricity markets, investment conditions, data and technology, and the role of solar in the green transition and Europe’s evolving energy landscape. The event will take place on 19 May in Helsinki, and the first speakers have been announced. Join us to learn what is moving the industry!

Solar power is becoming an important driver of Europe’s green transition, energy independence and industrial transformation. Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, a Member of Parliament and a former MEP (Member of European Parliament) from Social Democratic Parliamentary Group, will open the seminar by looking at how Finland can position itself at the forefront of this development and capture the opportunities created by Europe’s expanding clean energy investments.

Electricity Markets

In this session we will explore how solar power is becoming an increasingly important player in modern electricity markets and Finland’s energy transition. Speakers will examine the evolving value of solar in the power system, including the growing role of reserve markets and how solar parks can support grid stability while unlocking new revenue streams. The discussion will also highlight how battery energy storage systems (BESS) can strengthen the business case for new energy production and consumption in a rapidly changing market environment.

Speakers in this session:

  • Christian Breyer, Professor for Solar Economy, LUT University
  • Niko Korhonen, Expert, Fingrid Oyj
  • Lotta Dahl, Flexibility Business Developer, Fortum

Data & Markets

Discover the forces shaping the future of solar power in Europe and the Nordics. In the last session, experts will unpack the key trends, market dynamics and challenges influencing solar deployment today – from cannibalisation effects and cross-border market impacts to PPAs, solar-plus-storage projects and supply chain developments. The discussion will also highlight how more accurate solar resource data can reduce uncertainty and help strengthen the bankability of solar projects in Finland, opening new opportunities for growth in the region.

Speakers in this session:

  • Riku Merikoski, Senior Power Analyst, Axpo
  • Victoria Ortega, Research Analyst, Utility-scale solar PV – Europe, Wood Mackenzie
  • Sigbjørn Grini, Team Leader, Norconsult / Kjeller Vindteknikk
